Walk the duty location
Before the first shift, show the worker the assigned post, emergency entrances, exits and the route for requesting assistance. Explain which systems they are authorised to operate. A uniform or previous experience does not establish familiarity with this hospital. Include the shift supervisor and the clinical contact who can clarify patient-care concerns.
Explain responsibilities and limits
Discuss visitor assistance, observation, reporting and the institution’s escalation procedure. Clinical decisions remain with the appropriate professionals. Specialist intervention requires suitable training, lawful authority and local policy; an article cannot provide that competence. Make clear that the role is about protection and appropriate assistance, not punishment. Keep agreed pay, hours and supervision in the relevant staffing documents.
Check understanding through a scenario
Ask how the worker would request help if a visitor became threatening while an ambulance arrived. Look for clear responsibilities and a safe escalation route. Record unresolved questions before duty begins. Confirm who answers during the actual shift, including when the usual supervisor is absent. Repeat this orientation when the assigned location changes.
